John Ortbals was my father. He was a great artist and teacher who put his heart and soul into his creativity. He loved working with his students and really appreciated the most forward thinking and creative in the bunch. He learned from them and they learned from him. He was especially interested in your work. I am so glad that he is remembered by those that he taught. He lives on through their art. ~ Annie Ortbals

Here geometry is neither upheld as an ideal or flogged like a dead horse. Instead it is put into active contingency, affecting and effected by its situation. The black circle wants to be stark and graphic (or maybe we want it that way), but it slides over the triangle and is unavoidably implicated in its reality.

He always has a very philosophical way of talking about painting. You'll notice he doesn't speak much of HIS painting, but painting in general, and when he speaks of painting, he is not speaking of representational painting, that is picture making.

You're right on VC. Sprecher and others have also spoken of the fragments of images that influence and add to his work. He has a self-described "eclectic aesthetic" and works as a hunter-gatherer, processing images as he comes across them. His work seems definitive in its execution, a quick snippet of a memory, and a disavowal of any consideration of style.

It is very interesting that the works seem fragmentary, or almost fragmentary. That is, they seem to deliberately lack an assertiveness or emblematic quality that often appears in abstraction, from Mondrian to Eric Sall (whose work I an others are puzzling over on MWCapacity). This stuff, instead, appears provisional, but not wishy-washy. It seems to reflect a worldview that is skeptical of dogma.

Yes! I definitely meant the Noz/no-Noz comment as a compliment. Sprecher seems to have something in common with the style of Nozkowski in one painting and the "spirit" of Nozkowski in his practice generally.
